High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE)

At Gregory Hills Public School, we are dedicated to supporting the NSW Department of Education’s High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) policy, which celebrates the many different strengths and talents of our students. We believe every child deserves the opportunity to be challenged, engaged, and supported to reach their full potential.

Our approach focuses on recognising and nurturing each child’s abilities, whether they shine academically, creatively, physically, or socially. We provide a supportive and inclusive learning environment where students are encouraged to explore their interests, think deeply, and grow in confidence. By catering to the whole child, we aim to help every student develop the skills and mindset for lifelong success and wellbeing.

What is High Potential and Gifted Education?

High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our High Potential and Gifted Education Opportunities

Our students engage with  HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In Our Classroom

We are committed to recognising and nurturing high potential and gifted students, ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive at our school.

  • Teachers provide differentiated tasks that adjust the pace, complexity, and level of higher order thinking to meet the diverse needs of all learners. They use formative assessment to monitor student growth and adapt learning experiences accordingly. Through explicit teaching, students develop critical thinking and problem-solving strategies that deepen understanding and independence. Flexible grouping is also used to encourage collaboration, idea sharing, and effective presentation of learning.
  • We create supportive and safe learning environments where students feel confident to explore new ideas, try different approaches, and reflect on their own learning. Students are encouraged to take risks in their learning, persevere through challenges, and celebrate their progress along the way.
  • Students are given opportunities to take on leadership roles within the classroom, helping them build confidence and responsibility. They also take part in structured group activities that encourage teamwork, sharing ideas, and reflecting on their learning together.
Across our School and Beyond

Our school recognises that every student is individual, and we provide flexible and diverse opportunities for students to explore and grow.

At Gregory Hills Public School, we provide a wide range of opportunities to support and extend our High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) students, both within the classroom and the wider community. Our programs aim to nurture different talents and interests, helping every student grow, be challenged, and succeed in their chosen areas.

  • Students can develop their intellectual and communication skills through Debating, Public Speaking, and STEM and coding programs, the podcasting initiative and the Premier’s Reading Challenge that inspire curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.

  • Our Creative Arts opportunities include Southern Stars dance ensemble, choir and visual arts and drama showcases, giving students the chance to express themselves artistically and work collaboratively. Those who enjoy performing can also take part in drama and cheerleading clubs that build confidence and teamwork.

  • For students with sporting interests, we offer representation opportunities through GALA Day and Knockout Teams and representative sporting pathways that encourage skill development, perseverance, and team spirit at district and regional levels.

  • Leadership is an important focus, with opportunities available through the Student Representative Council (SRC), the School Leadership Team and the Transition to High School Programs.
  • We also place strong emphasis on wellbeing, offering programs and whole-school initiatives that promote inclusion, resilience, and a sense of belonging for all students.

We are proud to offer diverse and engaging opportunities that help our high-potential and gifted learners thrive academically, creatively, physically, socially, and emotionally, both within our school and beyond.
